Swimable enriches the lives of children with disabilities through providing specialized swim instruction with certified university trainers while simultaneously providing support services to their families.
Our model consists of three parts: our volunteers, our swimmers, and their families. Swimable recruits university students and trains them to become Swimable-certified swim instructors capable of working with children with disabilities. Our swimmers can enjoy customized swim classes led by instructors that interact well and understand swimmers’ individual needs. Lastly, our parent and sibling group provides education and awareness of new technologies and community services as well as a space for their families to relax.
WHAT THE U OF I COMMUNITY IS SAYING:
“I think your idea is really innovative and is certainly sustainable. I think the real gem here is that you will have all these parents in the same area essentially just waiting for something to do and this has the power to create change.” -Tracy Kleparski, Assistant Director of Aquatics and Adaptive/Inclusive Recreation at UIUC
OUR SUCCESS SO FAR:
After our wildly successful launch in spring of 2014, Swimable was accepted into the iVenture Accelerator, an educational accelerator for top student startups at the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign. This prepared us for an even bigger fall swim season (with double the families and an additional swim lesson location) as well as expansion efforts to University of Illinois at Chicago. As of today, we are preparing for a great 3rd season with Swimable @ UIUC and our launch at Swimable @ UIC.
